Replicants

Roy's End

I love his speech, it could easily spin off to another cool film.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. [pause] Time to die." Roy Batty

Bilbo?

Bilbo Baggins

Who's planning on taking a hike through Middle Earth this week? I can recommend a good B & B near Mirkwood. Be sure to pack plenty of provisions -  and don't forget your hat, walking stick or money!

(Thanks to Sarah K for the idea of drawing Bilbo by NOT drawing Bilbo, and for linking me to the Hobbit soundtrack this week. It certainly stirred something Tookish inside me.)

Quick Sketch Challenge - Golden Girls

Quick Sketch Challenge - Golden Girls feat. Sophia

Mystery Cave Quick Sketch Challenge

Something new for The Mystery Cave and we need YOUR help to make it work!

Henry and I have been having a blast each week drawing characters that we think are cool or fun to interpret and we definitely thank you for taking the time to check them out. However, we also wanted to find a way to sometimes work in some characters that YOU would like to see drawn. So we've come up with The Mystery Cave Quick Sketch Challenge.

It's simply a one-hour sketch-off between Henry and me (Niall) with the character suggestion coming from someone other than ourselves. We're still going to be doing our more involved illustrations for the Cave, but from time to we'll thrown in one of these Quick Sketch Challenges. It's a way for us to challenge ourselves (and each other) and for you to be involved in helping us choose a character to draw.

We're going to be doing the first Quick Sketch Challenge tonight: Friday, November 23, 2012  at 11pm. If you have a (fairly) well-known pop culture character in mind that you'd like to see us interpret, well, all you have to do is be the first person to leave your character suggestion as a comment on THIS post, here on the Mystery Cave blog (NOT Facebook), timestamped 11:00pm tonight or after, and we'll try to draw the character you've chosen. Our posts will go up by 12:00am. If either of us go past that deadline, well, that will simply be an excruciatingly heavy and infinitely embarrassing burden of shame for that artist to bear.

Well? Are you up for it? If so, see you tonight at 11pm!

Freddy Krueger - Happy Hallowe'en!

It's Hallowe'en 2012 and I'm so glad that Henry and I chose one of the most iconic figures in horror to kick off The Mystery Cave: Freddy Krueger! The characters we choose to interpret here certainly won't always be horror ones, but today it's fitting. I've always liked Freddy a whole lot - not only is he a truly disturbing character who is capable of killing you in your dreams (I mean, there's no escape from such an insidious trap! Everybody's gotta sleep sooner or later!), but he always does it with flair, humour and whole lot of imagination too. A killer with gusto and a great sweater.

And, does he have some kind of extra power to make the adults of any given household just totally zone out or what? He must draw his strength from the powerful imaginations of the young, because the adults of his world just do not get it. When I was a young fan of the Nightmare On Elm Street movies, the obliviousness of the adults while their kids struggled with something that only they could see appealed to me very strongly, and it's an aspect of that world that I definitely wanted to capture in this image.
